Families in Crisis Inc., a domestic violence social service agency based in Killeen, has already welcomed clients into its new satellite location since opening in August. But this first year will be critical for the shelter, say both charity organizers and the director of the agency. And it is for this reason that the charity was chosen as the sole recipient for this year’s tournament, organizers said.
“We wanted to make sure that this charity, in particular, would have a successful first year by supporting them in their critical year,” said Mike Cowan, manager of the Wildflower Country Club, which is hosting the tournament and a member of the charity selection committee.
“It’s a very worthwhile initiative,” Cowan said.
Agency Executive Director Diane Pascoe said the funds will be a much-needed shot in the arm for the area’s fledgling shelter.
In its first year, Pascoe said, the shelter will not qualify for State support. Proceeds from this event, she said, “will allow us to continue services to children and it’s given us time to pursue other avenues to sustain us for our second year.”
The shelter takes in victims of domestic violence and their children from Temple and surrounding areas to be housed in a secure building. With a fully-equipped and stocked kitchen, as well as with linens, clothing and dorm-style living arrangements, the shelter is designed to accept families coming in with only the clothes on their back, Pascoe said.
Golfers may register for the sixth-annual charity golf tournament as teams or individuals from now until the day of the tournament for $125 a person. The event, which can accommodate up to 36 teams of four will begin at 10:30 a.m. and will continue until 6:30 that evening.
The tournament will donate 100 percent of its proceeds to shelter programs geared toward children, said co-coordinator Donnie Lucas.
The cost of putting on the event will be covered by donations by the tournament’s namesake, Dr. Ralph Wilson, a local dentist and heir to the Ralph Wilson Plastics Company.
“He has had a major, major impact,” Lucas said. “Everybody who has lived in Temple for any amount of time knows what he has meant to the community in terms of employment and charity work that he and his wife have provided down throughout the years.”
Wildflower members will also rely on sponsors, an auction, raffle and phone-a-thon to meet their $70,000 goal for the FIC shelter.
During the mid-September phone-a-thon Mike Thompson and a team of business and civic leaders will call area residents for donations. They hope to raise $25,000. Charity Classic sponsorships range from $2,000 to $250 and are available by calling Wildflower.
The auction will be held at the cocktail party following the tournament. Items on the block include a Hilton Head Condo for seven nights and a Barton Creek golf package for four.
Raffle tickets are available at Wildflower at a cost of one for $20, two for $50 and seven for $100. Items in the raffle will include an Electric Chef grill and 60-inch island with refrigerator, a large HDTV and a 45-bottle wine cooler. Winning names will be drawn during the cocktail party.
Registration forms are available at Wildflower Country Club, 2000 Marlandwood Road in Temple, or by calling (254) 771-1177.
