An off-duty Temple police officer died Friday after his motorcycle collided with a car during a funeral procession.

Officer David Camden, 39, was pronounced dead at Scott and White Memorial Hospital shortly after the 12:20 p.m. accident in the 700 block of North 8th Street. He had worked for the Temple Police Department since 1996.

During what he called “a very sad press conference for us,” Temple Police Lt. Edward Best said the department received news of the accident and were responding when they learned that an off-duty police officer was involved.

“The Temple Fire Department and the ambulance did an excellent job, and they transported him very quickly,” Best said. “We learned not long after he got there that they pronounced him deceased.”

Camden was working off-duty for a private company that provides escorts for funerals. Company officials declined to comment.

Camden was moving from one intersection to block the next when the accident occurred.
