Edcouch will maintain two police officers for daytime patrols, but the rest of the city’s work force will not report to work next week, said Delmira Olivarez, interim city administrator.
“Hopefully, we can survive this,” said Olivarez, herself among the layoffs. She said will continue working without pay.
The town of 3,300 residents is $1.2 million in debt, and it overestimated its revenues for the coming month. City officials had expected two residential construction permits to generate income to meet its $5,600 weekly payroll next week, Olivarez said. But now the permit money is not expected until late October.
