Freezing rain cancels events, closes schools

AUSTIN (AP) - Wintry weather blanketed much of Texas with ice Monday, causing the death of at least one driver and prompting warnings of possible power outages as another frigid surge approached.

A Dallas woman killed early Monday was the third Texas fatality since storms slammed into the state over the weekend.

A winter storm warning was issued for South Central Texas until Tuesday evening. The possibility of freezing rain, sleet and snow falling prompted officials at the University of Texas and Austin public schools to close for Tuesday.

The frigid weather moved from North Texas into the Austin area early Monday, with drizzle and freezing rain causing cancellation of Martin Luther King Jr. Day events citywide. A Fort Worth parade also was canceled, and the prospect of wintry weather caused officials to cancel Gov. Rick Perry
