Albert C. Hollinger Sr.

KILLEEN — A memorial service for Albert “Al” Charles Hollinger Sr., 89, of Harker Heights will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Grace Lutheran Church in Killeen with the Rev. Andrew Green officiating.

Mr. Hollinger died Thursday, Oct. 11, at a Killeen nursing home.

He was born in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, to Charles and Elizabeth Wagner Hollinger.

He taught music at the Sherwood Music Conservatory in Chicago and at the University of North Texas. He also taught music and was band director at Longview High School and at Kilgore High School.

He moved to Killeen in 1956 where he owned and operated Killeen Credit Bureau until 2003. He served five years in the 229th Battalion of the Scots/Fusilier Canadian Army. In 1957, he initiated the Arian Award, given to outstanding local high school musicians. He and his wife were among the charter members of the “Vive Les Arts Society.” He married Hazel Mae Taylor on Nov. 6, 1942, in Fort Worth. She preceded him in death on July 18, 2003.

He was a member of the Killeen Noon Lion’s Club, Harker Heights 55-Up Club, Gilmore Senior Center, Wally Byam Caravan Club and Grace Lutheran Church in Killeen. He graduated from Kitchener Collegiate Institute and also attended the Sherwood Music Conservatory in Chicago. He received a master’s degree in music from the University of Houston and the Conservatory of Music in Houston.

Survivors include two sons, Charles Hollinger and Robert “Bob” Hollinger, both of Killeen; one daughter, Carolyn Evans of Ashland, Ky.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Grace Lutheran Church Building Fund, the Texas Lion’s Camp in Kerrville, the Lion’s Club “Sight First” campaign or to the Killeen school district high school music programs.

Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Killeen is in charge of arrangements.
