Dr. Charles W. Barrier

A memorial service for Dr. Charles Wesley Barrier, 80, of Salado will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Salado United Methodist Church with the Rev. Travis Franklin officiating.

Dr. Barrier died Friday, Oct. 12, at his home.

He was born in Rochester, Minn., to Charles Wesley and Leanora Barrier. He was a physician at Scott and White Memorial Hospital in Temple and Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. He was also an instructor of medicine. He was active in the medical corps in the U.S. Navy and then pursued a medical career at the University of Texas Medical School in Galveston. He was an intern at St. Luke’s Hospital in Chicago and a neurological resident at the Mayo Clinic. He returned to Texas in 1961 and was one of the first neurologists in the state. After his retirement, he served as medical director at the Veteran’s Hospital in Waco, a director of the Humanities Institute in Salado, a mentor at the Department of Corrections women’s prison in Gatesville, an advocate for Child Services (CASA in Bell County) and a board member of the Cen-Tex Rehabilitation Center in Temple. He was reared in Fort Worth and attended Arlington Heights High School. He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire in 1942. He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanne Barrier; one son, Hunter Barrier; three daughters, Jeanne Little, Sally Barrier and Ann Carter; one sister, Ann Barrier Hendricks; and eight grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Salado United Methodist Church or to Lighthouse Hospice in Georgetown.
