Despite her three-stroke victory in the individual race, the Lady Cougars finished one-stroke behind Round Rock Westwood I 340-341 in the race for the team championship. Waco Midway was third at 353 in the 16-team field.
The host Tem-Cats finished eighth in the field with a 383 and had coach Aaron Rodeffer smiling.
“We improved by 16 strokes over our first tournament,” Rodeffer said. “I couldn’t be happier. We’ve broken 400 twice. This says a lot about the girls on the team this season. They want to improve. If we continue to improve like this, district (in the spring) could be very interesting. They practice together and enjoy each other’s company.”
Temple was led by McKenzie Ralston’s 87 and a 95 by Paige Hitt. Other varsity scores were a 98 by Karly Houchin, a 103 by Jordin Moreno and a 118 by Lesley Allen. Temple also had medalists Ashley Mungia (96) and Cat Leavitt (114).
Belton did not field a complete team, but the Lady Tigers’ Kessler Tormey posted a 79 to tie Westwood’s Cheryl Feldmaier for second.
Tormey ended up with the second-place hardware as the two were unable to play off the tie. Feldmaier’s clubs had returned to Austin with her parents about two hours prior to the needed playoff.
Christian, who had an eagle on No. 6, had to overcome three double-bogeys during her round. China Spring competed with a team of four sophomores and one freshman.
The next action for the Tem-Cats will be Oct. 31, when they play in the Lady Tiger Fall Invitational at Wildflower Country Club. Belton coach Sherry Ayres said she currently has 13 teams entered in her event.
