Area Roundup: CTCS bolsters playoff hopes; Rockdale beats Taylor; Cove escapes Midway

The Central Texas Christian Lions (5-3, 3-1) bolstered their playoff hopes in TAPPS District 4 Six-Man playoff by cruising to a 52-26 win over the Cedar Park Summit Eagles at Frazee Field on Friday night.

The Lions struck first with quarterback Taylor Truitt throwing a 24-yard touchdown to Marshall Hugo. The Lions scored again in the first quarter and managed to hold off the Eagles (5-3, 1-3) until 8:43 in the second quarter when Josh Olsen scored on a 4-yard run to make the score 14-6.

Rockdale 35, Taylor 21

TAYLOR - Kortlin White continued to make up for lost time, rushing for 144 yards and scoring three touchdowns to lead the Rockdale Tigers to a 35-21 win over Taylor in District 18-3A action at Memorial Stadium.

White staked the Tigers (3-6, 2-1) to an early lead with two touchdowns in the first 6:00. He scored on a 14-yard run to make it 7-0 and, after the Ducks tied it on a 36-yard run by Greg Carter, broke free on a 59-yard jaunt to make give the Tigers a 14-7 lead. He added an insurance touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 14-yard run.

Jarrell 28, Florence 14

FLORENCE - Chris Trevino scored three touchdowns while rushing for 166 yards on 23 carries to lead the Jarrell Cougars over the Florence Buffaloes 28-14 in a District 25-2A game at Stampede Stadium.

Jarrell (3-5, 2-3) responded to a 7-yard Florence scoring pass to Blake Brimer in the second quarter with a 5-yard touchdown run by Kyle Beal and Trevino’s first score, which came with 23 seconds left in the half.

After Florence (4-4, 2-3) tied the game up on Brimer’s 1-yard run with five seconds left in the third quarter, Trevino took over in the final stanza with scoring runs of 27 and 10 yards.

Lago Vista 35, Rosebud-Lott 13

TRAVIS - The Lago Vista Vikings rolled to a win on the strength of their ground game. The Vikings made easy work of the Rosebud-Lott defense as they steamrolled their way to 411 yards on the ground.

With 7 seconds remaining in the first half, Brandon Grant found Ryan Baranek for a 19 yard touchdown pass to put the Vikings (4-4, 1-4) up 21-7. Darrell Whitfield and the Cougars (2-6, 1-4) attempted to rally late in the fourth quarter with a 23-yard reception from Cap Suddeth narrowing the Viking lead to 15 points.

No. 7 Copperas Cove 48, Waco Midway 45

HEWITT - Seventh-ranked Copperas Cove held off a late rally by the Waco Midway Panthers for a 48-45 District 16-4A victory at Panther Stadium.

Troy Vital and Robert Griffin led the Bulldawgs’ wave of scoring, with Vital rushing for touchdowns of 10 and 5 yards and pulling in a 9-yard scoring pass from Griffin. Griffin completed three scoring passes on 9-of-11 passing for 148 yards and added a 45-yard TD and a 2-point conversion on the ground.

The eventual winning points for Cove (7-1, 2-1) came on a 70-yard return of a blocked kick by Tanner Brock. Midway fell to 4-4, 1-2.

Thrall 14, Milano 13

THRALL - Milano quarterback Chad Burgess, who left the game in the third quarter with an injury, returned late in the fourth to attempt a game-winning 22-yard field goal. But the kick was short and the Thrall Tigers claimed a 14-13 District 27-A victory at Tiger Stadium.

Burgess led the Eagles (5-3, 2-2) to a first-half lead, scoring on a 3-yard run in the first, then picking off a Brandon Becker pass and returning it 78 yards for a 13-0 lead.

But the second half was all Thrall. The Tigers (4-3, 2-3) got a 2-yard scoring run from Lamar Williams in the third quarter, then Becker scored on a 49-yard scamper in the fourth to take a 14-13 lead.

No. 7 Waco La Vega 56, Gatesville 6

GATESVILLE - The LaVega Pirates showed why they are No. 7 in the 3A ranks, as they scored four touchdowns in less than 6 minutes to take a 56-6 District 17-3A victory over Gatesville at McKamie Stadium.

Leading 14-0 with less than 2 minutes remaining in the first half, the Pirates (8-0, 3-0) reeled off two touchdowns, then recovered the Hornets fumble on the opening kickoff of the second half.

The Hornets (2-6, 1-2) got an 8-yard run from Cody Kilgore late in the fourth quarter to avoid the shutout.

Thorndale 35, Holland 7

HOLLAND - Thorndale used big plays at the start and end of the game to pull away from the Holland Hornets 35-7 in a District 27-A game at Hornet Field.

The Bulldogs’ Cody Schneider took the opening kickoff back for an 85-yard touchdown. They closed the scoring in a 21-point fourth quarter with a 12-yard fumble recovery by Blake Dougherty.

Holland (4-4, 1-3) came back to tie the score at the end of the first half with Clayton Ash scoring on a 4-yard run with 41 seconds left.

McGregor 40, Moody 0

MCGREGOR - The Moody Bearcats continue to seek that first league win, falling 40-0 to McGregor in District 21-2A action at Bulldog Stadium.

The Bulldogs (5-3, 2-1) jumped out to a 26-0 lead in the first quarter, getting touchdowns from Qualin Brown on runs of 15 and 4 yards and touchdown passes of 35 and 30 yards from Joe Seward.

The Bearcats are 1-7 overall, 0-3 in district play.

Burton 40, Bartlett 24

BARTLETT - Burton turned three blocked punts into touchdowns and grounded out 309 yards rushing to finally pull away from stubborn Bartlett 40-24 and keep the Bulldogs winless for the year.

Erick Benevides opened the scoring for Bartlett with an 11-yard run and led 6-0 at the end of the first quarter. But Burton scored twice in the second period.

Gabriel Gadison scored on a 14-yard run for Bartlett (0-8, 0-4 District 27-A). Burton (4-4, 2-2) led 14-12 at the half.

Benevides took a 10-yard pass from Pierre Smith in the third period and narrowed the Burton margin to 20-18, but Burton scored 20 unanswered points for the win.

Lometa 62, Buckholts 18

LOMETA - The Lometa Hornets scored a 62-18 victory over the Buckholts Badgers at Hornet Field in the District 16-Six Man opener for both teams.

The Badgers stand at 3-5 and 0-1, while Lometa is 5-3 and 1-0.

OTHER SCORES: Pflugerville Hendrickson 42, Lampasas 7; Clifton 24, Bruceville-Eddy 6
