Temple police expressed confidence the man detained in Rockdale was the same person who went on a crime spree that lasted more than five hours.
The incident began to unfold at about 3:45 a.m. at the Wal-Mart store on 31st Street. Police said a man stole a shotgun from the store and used it to attempt a robbery of the Walgreen’s Drug Store across the street.
Every on-duty officer came to the area to try to locate the man, who was seen still carrying the shotgun as he fled on foot, police said.
Five hours later a call to police came in about a car jacking at an apartment complex at 1810 Marlanwood. Police said a silver 2005 Dodge Neon was taken.
Police said the man entered Wal-Mart and used a golf club to break a glass case and steal a shotgun.
It is not clear at this time if he removed any ammunition from the store. The guns in the store are equipped with trigger locks, and it appears the lock worked.
Police say the man next entered Walgreen’s and demanded money from two male employees.
When the man was unable to get money from the employees, police say he struck one of them in the face with the gun, then fled. He was later seen with the shotgun running through the parking of Temple Living Center, 1700 Marlandwood, police said.
No one was hurt at Wal-Mart.
The injured Walgreen employee was transported to Scott & White Hospital by ambulance, where he was treated and released.
