AREA FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: No. 7 Salado slams Florence; Academy loss ruins playoff hopes

SALADO - The No. 7-ranked Salado Eagles clinched their second straight District 25-2A title by toppling the Florence Eagles 44-0 at Eagle Stadium on Friday night.

Salado’s (8-0, 5-0) passing combo of David Rosenau and Clayton Whitmire connected for three scores, on passes of 19, 14 and 23 yards, respectively.

The Eagles’ air attack was followed up with a 54-yard scoring run at the end of the first half by Leo Galvan and a 66-yard touchdown run by Seth Collins.

Florence fell to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in district play.

Lago Vista 56, Academy 14

LAGO VISTA - The Academy Bumblebees saw their chances at postseason contention evaporate in a 56-14 District 25-2A loss to Lago Vista at Lago Vista Stadium.

The Vikings (5-4, 2-4) took the early lead behind the bulldozing of Devin Brown, who rushed for 221 yards and five touchdowns. He led a ball-control offense that rushed 60 times for 452 yards. The Vikings threw just two passes, completing both for 60 yards.

Academy’s bright spots came from quarterback Kyle Kuban, who scored both Bee touchdowns while rushing 12 times for 96 yards. He also completed four passes to Andrew Sodek for 59 yards.

The loss drops Academy to 5-4 overall, 3-3 in district.

Central Texas Christian 68, San Antonio New Life 20

SAN ANTONIO - Central Texas Christian Lions scored a 68-20 over the San Antonio New Life Eagles on Friday night.

The Lions (7-3, 4-1) took an early 16-0 lead on the strength of their running attack, led by Tyler Beechem.

The Eagles (1-9, 0-5) scored in the first quarter on a 9-yard Jeremy McDonald run, but that and a subsequent score did little to discourage the Lions.

Beechem led all rushers with 206 yards and six touchdowns.

Other CTCS scores included a first quarter 70-yard kickoff return by Caleb Milne, a second quarter run for a touchdown by Caleb Paschall and a 1-yard touchdown by Taylor Truitt.

No. 7 Copperas Cove 33, Killeen 10

COPPERAS COVE - The Copperas Cove Bulldawgs broke open a close game in the third quarter, getting 21 unanswered points to take a 33-10 District 16-4A victory over Killeen at Bulldawg Stadium.

The win vaulted the No. 7 Dawgs into the playoffs, while the Kangaroos were eliminated from postseason contention.

The Roos took the early lead on a 37-yard field goal by Matt Funk. Cove countered with a 2-yard scoring run by Troy Vital to take a 6-3 lead at halftime, and Vital upped the ante to 12-3 on a 17-yard run in the third.

Killeen cut it to 12-10 when Alijawon White scored from the 2, but then Copperas Cove reeled off three straight touchdowns - a 21-yard run by Robert Griffin, a 63-yard run by Vital, and a 9-yard pass to Donel Morrison from Griffin - to seal the win.

Copperas Cove now stands at 8-1, 3-1 in district, while Killeen fell to 5-4 and 1-3.

Milano 35, Bartlett 14

MILANO - The Milano Eagles (6-3, 3-2) ran past the Bartlett Bulldog defense (0-9, 0-5) for 331 yards in District 27-A play.

Eagle quarterback Chad Burgess delivered a soaring perfomance individually rushing for 237 yards on 23 carries.

Burgess tossed a 30-yard pass to Paul Adrian, had an interception on defense, and scored on run’s of 52 and 19 yards.

Bartlett tailback Gabriel Gadison also provided some fireworks with a 59-yard scamper to paydirt in the third quarter.

Burton 43, Holland 6

BURTON - The Burton Panthers ground out 304 yards rushing and dominated the Holland Hornets 43-6 in a District 27-A game at Panther Stadium.

Brandon Patterson was the workhorse, rushing for 181 yards on just 12 carries, while Bobby Mathis added 55 more on six totes.

The Hornets made it a one-touchdown game in the third quarter. Trailing 15-0, Clayton Ash scored on a 2-yard run to close it to 15-6. But Spencer Kunkel returned the ensuing kickoff 65 yards to break the game open. The Panthers (5-4, 3-2) then scored 21 unanswered points to claim the victory.

Doug Murphy led Holland with 87 yards on 18 carries. The Hornets drop to 4-5 and 1-4 in district.

Crawford 48, Moody 7

MOODY - The Crawford Pirates, on the strength of an overwhelming ground game, clobbered the Moody Bearcats 48-7 on their home turf in District 21-2A play.

The Pirates’ Jordan Farmer ground out two touchdowns and 151 yards on just two carries in the first quarter. The Pirates (6-2, 2-1) scored three more rushing touchdowns, one by Farmer and two by Brock Duncan, before the Bearcats (1-7, 0-3) would manage to score their lone touchdown in the fourth quarter when Walter Hammond hauled in a 2-yard pass from Nate Wilburn.

Robinson 31, Gatesville 10

ROBINSON - The Robinson Rockets (5-4, 2-2) conquered the Gatesville Hornets (2-7, 1-3) in District 17-3A play.

Rockets tailback Seth Mogavero made himself at home in the “Hornets Nest” as he shredded the Gatesville defense for three touchdowns.

Up 10-3 at halftime, the Rockets rushing attack turned on their afterburners scoring three touchdowns in the second half.

Mogavero scored twice on the ground with runs of 1 and 5 yards and caught a 10-yard pass from Ruben Martinez for another score.

Buckholts 50, Cherokee 28

BUCKHOLTS - Dillon Orsag passed for four touchdowns and ran for three more for Buckholts as the Badgers battered Cherokee 50-28 in a District 16-Six-Man game at Jim Hauk Field.

Orsag’s runs were 17, 43 and 71 yards. His passing touchdowns went four yards, 15 yards and five yards to Allen Shelton. One 32-yard pass went to Arik Yates.

Buckholts upped its season record to 4-5 and evened its district record at 1-1. Cherokee dropped to 3-5 on the season and 0-2 in district play.

Cedar Park Vista Ridge 42, Lampasas 0

LEANDER - Cedar Park Vista Ridge racked up 366 yards of offense, all but four on the ground, in a dismantling of the winless Lampasas Badgers.

The Rangers (3-6, 3-3) allowed just 135 yards of total offense to the Badgers (0-9, 0-6).
