Jack Gambrell

ROCKDALE — Services for Jack Gambrell, 83, of Austin, formerly of Rockdale will be 10 a.m. Friday at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale with the Rev. Jack Chelf officiating.

Burial will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Rockdale.

Mr. Gambrell died Tuesday, Nov. 6, in Austin.

He was born in Milano to Fletcher Summers and Bernice Alga Howe Gambrell. He was a letter carrier for the U.S. Post Office in Austin for 35 years. He married Billie Joyce Stringer on Dec. 2, 1948, in Martindale. He was a graduate of Milano High School. He was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Army. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Rockdale and Trinity Evangelical Free Church in Austin where he was Chairman and Trustee. He was a leader of Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Boys Brigade and Awanas and a member of PTA for 35 years. He worked as a child picking cotton in Milano, messenger and night manager for Western Union, receiving clerk for Walter Tipps, childrens shoe salesman for Buttreys and route salesman for Dr Pepper.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Michael William Gambrell of Austin, and Jon Charles Gambrell of Leander; a daughter, Jacqueline Gambrell Samuelson of Hutto; ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 109, Rockdale 76567 or to Christopher House in Austin, 2820 E. MLK, Austin 78702.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
