Special Edition details community, world news coverage

When the Temple-Northwestern Railway was contracted to Temple in 1910, the Temple Daily Telegram was there.

When devastating floods took more than 100 lives throughout Williamson and Milam Counties in 1912, the Telegram was there.

When KTEM broadcast around the world for the first time for two hours on Christmas Day in 1936, the Telegram was there.

It was there when Camp Hood opened its doors in 1942, a roaring fire destroyed a quarter block of downtown Temple in 1961 and a gunman opened fire at Luby’s Cafeteria in Killeen and killed 23 people in 1991.

For the last 100 years, the Telegram has taken Temple residents into the heart of breaking news, telling the joys and the pains of the Central Texas community.

The Telegram will be honored at 2 p.m. today with a dedication of the Temple Daily Telegram’s historical marker.

To help celebrate the Telegram’s dedication, Temple Mayor Bill Jones, Rep. Dianne White Delisi and County Judge Jon Burrows will share brief remarks.

Included in today’s paper is a special 100th Anniversary section, highlighting local and national events through the years since the Telegram’s birth in 1907.

The Anniversary Edition has been in the works for months, with newspaper staff members pouring their time and dedication into preparing the 10 special sections.

Each section models a decade since the Telegram has been in operation, retracing the Telegram’s coverage through the years.
