Gibbs Milliken

AUSTIN — Services for Samuel Gibbs Milliken Jr., 71, of West Lake Hills will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Riverbend Church Smith Chapel in Austin.

Mr. Gibbs died Tuesday, Nov. 20, in Austin.

He was born in Houston to Dr. Samuel Gibbs and Harriet Bain Milliken. He was raised in Kerrville. He graduated from Schreiner Institute, attended the University of Colorado, and received a bachelor’s degree from Trinity University in San Antonio.

He worked for Texas Parks and Wildlife as a field photographer and writer. He also served as a curator at the Witte Museum in San Antonio. He completed his master’s degree in 1965 at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. He was a professor at the University of Texas at Austin where he taught art and Latin American studies for 41 years.

He worked as an artist for NASA. He led numerous expeditions into the Amazon rainforest. He was also director of the Organization for Tropical Research.

Survivors are his wife, Marie Splittgerber Milliken; two daughters Tamara Milliken Galbi, Adana Milliken Gipson; one sister, Alice Milliken Combs; and two grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Gibbs Milliken Scholarship Fund, Department of Art and Art History, The University of Texas, 1 University Station D-1300 Austin 78712-0337.

Austin-Peel and Son Funeral Home in Austin is in charge of arrangements.
