Senior running back Vital rushed for 2,068 yards and scored 25 touchdowns as the Bulldawgs advanced to the 4A Division I final before they lost to Rosenberg Lamar Consolidated.
On defense, junior linebacker Brock was honored on the first team for the second straight season after making 220 tackles (137 solo, three sacks), two fumble recoveries and scoring a touchdown.
Cove’s second-team selections were junior guard Anthony Mackey and junior kick returner Josh Boyce. Mackey (6-3, 265 pounds) had 102 pancake blocks, 72 decleat blocks and did not allow a sack as the top blocker for an offense that averaged more than 350 yards per game. Boyce returned 17 kicks for 460 yards and two touchdowns.
Killeen offensive tackle David Grant (6-6, 290) was also selected to the second team after recording 45 pancakes and 35 knockdowns for the Kangaroos.
Receiving honorable mentions were Cove seniors Robert Griffin and Steven Welch. Quarterback Griffin completed 106 of 187 passes for 1,362 yards with 16 touchdowns and ran for 1,314 yards and 24 more scores. Defensive lineman Welch (6-1, 275) made 59 tackles, including 35 solo, nine for loss and 4˝ sacks.
Lamar Consolidated running back Jacquizz Rodgers was voted Offensive Player of the Year, and linemen Ricky Cavanaugh of Austin LBJ and Damion Square of Houston Yates shared the Defensive Player of the Year award. Lydell Wilson of Lamar Consolidated and Jeff Dicus of Austin Lake Travis shared the Coach of the Year honor after guiding their teams to state titles.
