Mary Hardin-Baylor men, women earn victories at Schreiner

KERRVILLE - Mary Hardin-Baylor used balanced scoring to offset Schreiner’s 3-point barrage as the Crusaders pulled away from the Mountaineers for a 77-67 victory Thursday night.

No. 15 UMHB (14-3, 11-2 American Southwest Conference) maintained its 1½-game lead over Hardin-Simmons in the ASC West heading into the Crusaders’ home game Saturday against Texas Lutheran (1-16, 1-12).

After the Mountaineers (4-13, 4-9) cut a six-point deficit to one in the opening minutes of the second half, the Crusaders used a 10-1 run to pull away.

UMHB, which shot 48 percent from the field but only 63 percent (15-of-24) from the free-throw line, was led by Tilmon Gaddy’s 16 points.

Ryan Burgart came off the bench to score 13 points and grab seven rebounds, and David Ray added 12 points. Jason Wagner chipped in eight points and Neiman Ford had seven.

Schreiner, which made 10 of its 30 attempts from beyond the arc, got 17 points and 10 boards from Ronnie Barney. Keith Perry added 13 points and Riley Battle had 11.

WOMEN

UMHB 71, Schreiner 69

Freshman Landie Thompson poured in 26 points, and senior Blair Heitmiller hit a pair of free throws with 5 seconds left to lift Mary Hardin-Baylor over Schreiner.

The Lady Crusaders (10-7, 8-5 American Southwest Conference), who remained tied for fourth with Concordia Texas in the ASC West, led by nine points at halftime before the Mountaineers (5-13, 4-10) rallied.

UMHB’s Sasha Monreal tied it at 69 with 53 seconds left, and Heitmiller was fouled after rebounding Monreal’s missed 3-pointer in the closing seconds. She drained the two free throws and Schreiner couldn’t answer.

Thompson’s 26 points were a career high. She also had 14 rebounds for the Lady Crusaders, who overcame a poor shooting night. UMHB, which will host Texas Lutheran (0-14, 0-18) on Saturday, shot 34 percent from the field and 13 percent (3-of-23) from 3-point range.

Anna Fareed had 20 points, Monica Enriquez 18, Courtney Davis 11 and Lee Richardson 10 for Schreiner.
