Wilburn Beckhusen

CAMERON —Services for Wilburn E. Beckhusen, 83, of Buckholts, will be 10 a.m. Monday at Hope Lutheran Church in Buckholts with the Rev. Gary Kleypas officiating.

Burial will be in Hope Lutheran Memorial Park in Buckholts.

Mr. Beckhusen died Friday, Feb. 8, in a Temple hospital.

He was born Jan. 21, 1925, to Garrett Beckhusen and Ludie Fischer Beckhusen in Bryant Station. He farmed with his father for several years before branching out onto his own. He married Dorothy Lee Marchak on July 23, 1949. She preceded him in death in 1982. He married Venetia Hartley on June 4, 1984. He was active with the Buckholts Town Council; Director of Citizen’s National Bank from 1976 – 1997; Director of Texas independent Cotton Ginners Association; Director of Texas Boll Weevil Eradication Program; Former president of Cameron Area Chamber of Commerce; Founding Member of the Buckholts Betterment Association and served as its Secretary for many years; Bell-Milam Land and Water Rights Association; Director of St. Edwards Hospital; Milam County Crops Committee Chairman; Milam-Williamson County Pest Management Committee; Blackland Income Growth Committee; Blackland Cotton and Grain Association; and FSA County Committee. He was the recipient of the 1992 Horace Hayden Memorial Trophy for Outstanding Achievements in Cotton Ginning for the State of Texas. He was active at Hope Lutheran Church in Buckholts. He owned and operated Modern Gin and farmed in the Buckholts area from 1948 until the present time.

His parents; a sister, Beatrice; and a grandson, David Chenoweth, preceded him in death.

Survivors are his wife; three sons, Jeff Beckhusen of Houston, Jay Beckhusen and Douglas Beckhusen both of Buckholts; three daughters, Judy Prater of Taylor, Becky Novajosky of Sugar Land, Jo Ann Culpepper of Cameron; two stepsons, James Hartley of Alco, Tenn., and Tom Hartley of Dallas; one brother, Garrett H. Beckhusen of Temple; 17 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Buckholts Community Center, P.O. Box 133, Buckholts 76518, or Hope Lutheran Church of Buckholts, P.O. Box 156, Buckholts 76518.

Family visitation will be 4-6 p.m. today at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home in Cameron.
