Services for Robert Andrew Evans Sr., 85, of Belton will be 11 a.m. today at Belton Church of God In Christ of Belton with the Rev. William A. Quickley officiating.
Burial will be in Central Texas Veterans Cemetery in Killeen.
Mr. Evans died Tuesday, Feb. 5, in a Temple hospital.
He was born July 17, 1922, in Belton to Richard and Nettie Keys Evans.
He attended Harris High School, and after graduation, he entered the U.S. Army. He was a combat veteran of World War II where he was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds he received in battle. His other military awards included the Good Conduct Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon, Meritorious Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. After his military service, he was employed as a mechanic at Shine Brothers Texaco in Killeen. He was the commander of the Walton H. Walker Post 55, The American Legion Department of Texas for 15 years, receiving notorious service recognition by being placed in the Hall of Fame. He received the Outstanding Support Award of the Belton Church of God In Christ in Dec. 1991. He served 20 consecutive years as the Worshipful Master of the Nolan Creek Lodge #227 in Belton. He received the 50 year Masonic Certificate and the Certificate of Appreciation for his service as past master in the Nolan Creek Masonic Number 227, in Belton in Apr. 2000 and Dec. 1999 respectively culminating in a total of 58 years of service. He married Ida Mae Moore Dec. 26, 1947, in Belton. He was preceded in death by a son, Richard Alvin Evans. He was a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church in Belton since age 12. He was awarded one of the A.M.E. church’s Central Texas “Man of the Year” distinctions. He served dutifully as a Steward and the Head Trustee at Bethel A.M.E. Church.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Robert Andrew Jr., and Rodney Alan, both of Belton; three sisters, Alice Cox of Seattle, Wash, and Louise Johnson of Tacoma, Wash. and Mary Sargent of Belton; and five grandchildren.
