Neighbors react to couple’s deaths

BELTON - Neighbors described the couple killed in a suspected homicide-suicide Saturday on Terrier Street in Belton as friendly and nice.

Officers with the Bell County Sheriff’s Office were called to the house on Saturday because of reported gunshots. When they arrived on the scene, they found Jerry Dean Busby, 61, and Diana Shelton, 60, dead inside the house.

“Diana was friendly, very active and she went to church with us,” said Maria Garza, who has been a neighbor of Jerry Busby’s for 20 years.

Ms. Garza heard gunshots Thursday at about 7 p.m. and didn’t think much about it, she said.

“It’s not uncommon to hear gunshots. I thought it could have been someone shooting cans,” Ms. Garza said.

Billy Kimble, another neighbor, described Busby as a nice guy.

“Things like this just happen sometimes,” Kimble said.

Officers were called to the reported shooting at 11 a.m. Saturday. Both Busby and Shelton resided at the Terrier Street address, a press release from the Bell County sheriff’s office said.

The bodies were transferred to Dallas for autopsy.

The sheriff’s office is continuing its investigation of the deaths.
