With a battle against College Station A&M Consolidated for District 13-5A supremacy looming on Friday, Belton remained perfect in league play with a 10-1 thrashing of Harker Heights on Tuesday night at Wilson-Kerzee Field.
“I’m proud of the way our kids performed, because our practices lately have been geared toward Friday,” Lady Tigers coach Barry Elkins said. “A&M knows they have to win to have a chance at sharing the title.”
Michelle Hagen had three goals for Belton (17-2, 6-0 in 13-5A), which stormed to a 5-0 halftime lead, and Erica Michaud scored twice. Chelsea Jones added a goal and three assists, and Tori Seiler, Jourdan Brown, Lauren Van Orden and Kali Hellinghausen had one goal apiece.
Freshman goalkeeper Kelsi Darr gave up one goal in 65 minutes before giving way to Alyssa Conti.
“It was one of the cleanest games we’ve played all year,” Elkins said. “We only took 16 shots and scored 10 goals. But these girls are very mature and won’t get over-confident. They’ve shown they can handle winning big and still come to work that next day at practice.”
Friday’s game will start at 7 p.m. at Wilson-Kerzee Field.
