A Mass of Christian Burial for Deacon John Petter, 74, of Temple will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Temple with Bishop Gregory Aymond as celebrant, Monsignor Henry Petter as concelebrant and the Rev. Stephen Nesrsta as master of ceremonies.
Burial will follow in Temple Garden of Memories.
Deacon Petter died Friday, Feb. 22, at his home.
He was born Nov. 30, 1933, to Albin E. and Louise Gerich Petter in the Mount Calm community in Hill County. He attended West High School. He married Janie Marie Divin on Aug. 22, 1955, in Hillsboro. He graduated from Texas A&M University in 1956 with a bachelor’s degree in agricultural engineering. He was a 1st lieutenant in the U.S. Army from 1957-1959 stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso. He was employed in the feed mill business for 22 years and also worked as an equipment manager at a rock quarry, Temple Machine Shop and was a deacon of the Diocese of Austin for the past 12 years. He was a member of Deaconate Council of Austin Diocese, lifetime honorary member 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, and KJT Society 114 of Temple. He was a Deacon and member of St. Mary Catholic Church, and National Day of Prayer Task Force. He was a board member of Martha’s Kitchen and St Vincent de Paul. He was religious formation instructor and Czech heritage and language instructor at the KJT Summer Camp.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years; seven sons, Dale Petter, Timothy Petter, Kurt Petter, James Petter all of Temple, Charles Petter of Fort Worth, Gregory Petter of Belton, and Roger Petter of Magnolia; two daughters, Milissa Christian and Beverley Roeder both of Temple; and 31 grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s School Gymnasium.
Visitation will be 1-2:30 p.m. today at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home.
A wake will be 7 p.m. today at St. Mary Catholic Church.
