The Wildcats lost a 9-6 decision to Dallas Highland Park, then answered with a 10-1 win over Pflugerville at the Centex Hardball Tournament on Saturday.
“This was a good learning experience for us,” Temple coach Larry Haynes said. “We played some good teams this weekend, and we are excited to come away 4-2. We thought every game would be a challenge, and the boys played real good ball.”
The Wildcats were close to having an even better weekend, but a bases-loaded error in the second inning against Highland Park allowed three runs to score, giving the Scots a 4-1 lead.
Temple fought back and tied it at 5 in the sixth before Highland Park added four runs to seal it.
“We were able to scratch back in it but just couldn’t hold it at the end,” Haynes said. “We left a lot of runners on base as well, but overall it was a good game.”
After a slow start against Pflugerville, the Wildcats plated 10 runs in the final three innings to run-rule the host Panthers.
“We finally got things to fall in the fourth and fifth innings,” Haynes said. “And Pflugerville just ran out of pitching. You play so many games at these tournaments, by the final game you’re just throwing staff. That caught up to us against Highland Park.”
Temple next will play Abilene at noon Thursday at the Georgetown tournament.
