The Mary Hardin-Baylor golf teams had mixed results on the opening day of the UMHB Spring Invitational on Monday.

The men’s team shot a 312 at Wildflower Country Club to tie for third, seven strokes behind tournament leader Texas Lutheran. At Mill Creek Country Club in Salado, the Lady Crusaders struggled with a 368, tied for ninth.

The Crusaders’ Casey Wharton shares the men’s individual lead with Texas-Tyler’s Matt Stephens at 1-over-par 73. Three players are tied at 74. Davis Dewald shot a 77 and is currently in ninth place, Ryan Eastman finished with a 78, Garrison Nordt shot an 84 and Shaun Felechner had an 86.

The Crusader’s junior varsity team shot a 342, led by Eric White’s 80. Kevin Black added an 83, Travis Bice shot an 85, Nick Brown 94 and Jackson Chandler had a 95.

On the women’s side, Christi Williams showed she has recovered well from her shoulder injury, shooting an 85 in her first competitive round since April of 2007.

Oklahoma City University leads the women’s team standings with a 304 and holds the top four individuals spots, led by Tamara Campbell’s 74.

Other UMHB competitors are Courtney Nelson (92), Allison Williams (92), Kathyrne Lozano (99) and Taylour Shaw (100).

“It was a rough day,” UMHB women’s coach Darla Kirby said. “I was impressed with Christi but disappointed with our other scores.

“We still view it as there’s another round to go and this is just the first day of the tournament.”

Both tournaments conclude today with the men teeing off at 8:30 a.m. and the women at 9 a.m.
