Temple’s boys track and field team will seek to keep building momentum after last week’s runner-up finish at the Midway Relays when it hosts the annual Temple Relays today at Wildcat Stadium.

The six-school boys competition and the eight-team girls field will begin the action at 9 a.m. with the field events. The running finals are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.

The boys teams entered along with Temple are Harker Heights, Killeen, Killeen Shoemaker, Pflugerville Hendrickson and Waco Midway. Belton and Waco are sending only their junior varsity athletes.

Bryan won the 2007 Temple Relays championship with 127 points but isn’t back to defend its title, leaving runner-up Hendrickson (121) as the top returning squad.

Heights (103) took third place a year ago, and the Wildcats (69) were fourth out of eight teams.

The Temple girls will be joined by Belton, Heights, Killeen, Shoemaker, Waco, Hendrickson and Midway.

Heights racked up 150 points to run away with last year’s Temple Relays crown, finishing 52 ahead of Cedar Park. Shoemaker was third out of nine teams, followed by Belton, Austin Reagan, Bryan and Temple (52).

Coach Wayne Ransleben’s Temple boys got their season off to a strong start last Saturday at the Midway Relays, using five first-place finishes and two runner-up results to take second place.

The Wildcats’ winners were senior Harry Sheppard in the high jump, junior Tevin Reese in the triple jump, sophomore Lache Seastrunk in the 100-meter dash, senior Darnelle Tubbs in the 200 and freshman Chris Anderson in the 400.

Sheppard, last year’s Class 5A state silver medalist in the high jump, took second in the 400 at Midway. Temple’s 400 relay team of Anderson, Seastrunk, Major Lee and Quentin Tuck also captured a silver medal.

Returning Temple Relays champions include junior Reese in the 300 hurdles, Tem-Cats senior Trenette Smith in the long jump and Belton junior Morgan Toone in the pole vault.
