Belton edged by McCallum for first loss, recovers to rip San Central Central for top seed

GEORGETOWN - Despite picking up its first loss of the season, the Belton baseball team still earned the No. 1 seed out of the A bracket at the Georgetown Invitational.

The Tigers opened the day with a 6-5 eight-inning loss to Austin McCallum, then rebounded with a 12-1 win over San Angelo Central.

Seth Alcozer went 3-for-3, with two doubles and his fifth home run of the season in the second game.

Belton will play Cedar Park at 9:30 a.m. today in bracket play.

Belton jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first two innings before McCallum scored three runs in the fifth inning to take a 4-3 lead. The two teams traded runs in the sixth and seventh innings.

“Our mental focus was horrible (in the McCallum game),” Belton coach David Tidwell said. “I told the guys, ‘If you worked in a machine shop, you would have had your hands cut off.’”

Shane Hoelscher and Paul Wilson each went 2-for-4 at the plate.

Belton rebounded with a 12-1 win over Central thanks to a seven-run fourth inning.

Jordan Mattke pitched the complete game, earning his second win of the season.
