TC baseball wins a pair, reaches .500 mark entering conference play

BOSSIER PARISH, La. - For the first time since it was 0-0, the Temple College baseball team is back at the .500 mark - just in time for Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference competition.

After TC blasted Highland (Kan.) 8-1 early Saturday, Nick Anders’ two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Leopards to a 6-5 win over Lon Morris, pushing their record to 9-9.

“We’ve still got a lot of things to improve on, but it’s good to go into conference with momentum,” said Temple coach Craig McMurtry, whose team has won eight straight after a 1-9 start. “Even now at 9-9, we’re starting over at 0-0 in conference and we have to find a way to win 20 games the next two months.”

After its Friday game with Navarro was rained out, TC got two RBI apiece from Pedro Maldonado and Anders in the rout of Highland. Hunter Scott earned the win. The Leopards trailed Lon Morris 5-3 entering their final at-bat but got hits from Marshall Coots and Matt Loughrey before Johnathon Moore had an RBI single and Anders drove in two runs for the victory. Courtney Behrend was the winning pitcher.

TC’s pursuit of its seventh straight NJCAA Region V Tournament berth will begin Wednesday with a noon doubleheader at home against North Central Texas.
