KILLEEN - Temple senior Kat Wellman compiled a total of 755 pounds to capture the championship in Class 5A’s 148-pound class Friday in the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association State Meet at Killeen Civic and Conference Center.

Wellman, who took fourth place at state a year ago, trailed by 15 pounds entering the deadlift but then lifted 325 pounds to edge Weslaco’s Andrea Roldan by 5 pounds.

Temple junior Quineesha Jackson had a 470-pound total to finish fourth in the 97-pound class in his first state appearance, and Belton’s Samantha Martinez was runner-up in 5A’s 132-pound class.

Friday’s results for six girls from area 2A schools were unavailable. Today’s state competition will include seven girls from Gatesville, one from Cameron Yoe, two from Copperas Cove and one from Lampasas.
