Robbery suspect recovering after shootout with police

KILLEEN - A 40-year-old Killeen man charged with aggravated robbery is recovering from gunshot wounds he received in a shootout with police.

Killeen police spokeswoman Carroll Smith said the suspect, whose identity has not been released, was shot when he ambushed police in the 400 block of Baumann Drive early Wednesday morning.

Ms. Smith said police were called to Mickey’s Laundry in the 900 block of West Jasper Road at about 7:30 a.m. for an aggravated robbery.

“The victim gave a description of the suspect and police were in the area,” Ms. Smith said.

Officers began patrolling in the area of Andover and Baumann when Ms. Smith said they saw a man who fit the description given by the victim.

“He looked at them, and started running,” she said.

Officers pursued the man to Baumann Drive and apparently lost sight of him.

“He ran behind the house at 406 Baumann and pretty much was laying in wait,” she said.

Ms. Smith said when the officers came into the backyard, the man began firing a gun at them.

Officers returned fire and the suspect was hit several times.

He was taken by EMS to Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center, and later transferred to Scott & White Memorial Hospital in Temple, where he is listed in stable condition.

Ms. Smith said the same suspect ran from officers two weeks ago when police were called to the same neighborhood for a suspicious person.

Meanwhile, the suspect is looking at criminal charges for the aggravated robbery, Ms. Smith said.

However, charges ranging from aggravated assault to attempted capital murder could be filed when the Bell County District Attorney’s office has finished reviewing the case.

“We won’t know for sure until the investigation is complete,” Ms. Smith said.
