KILLEEN — Services for retired Master Sgt. Franklin L. Wakeland, 79, of Killeen will be 2 p.m. Friday at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Killeen with Chaplain Captain Douglas Kay officiating.
The body will be cremated.
Mr. Wakeland died Monday, March 31, in a local hospital.
He was born Oct. 30, 1928, in Muscatine, Iowa, to Joseph and Mamie Wakeland. He joined the U.S. Army at the beginning of World War II. He later served in the U.S. Air Force before returning to the Army where he served for more than 20 years during the Korean and Vietnam wars. His military awards include: Army Commendation Medal with OLC: Good Conduct Medal fourth award, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal. He retired in 1971 at Fort Sill, Okla. He moved to Killeen in 1980 and worked as a plumber, security guard and data collector for Peco Enterprises on Fort Hood. He then became self-employed as a saw and blade sharpener.
Survivors include his wife, Susie Wakeland of Kempner; three sons, Robert L. Wakeland of Killeen, Michael E. Wakeland of Darmstadt, Germany, and Shane Brown of Lampasas; three daughters, Evelyn Bragg of Chandler, Okla., Inge P. Newport of Burkville, and Diana L. Kabello of Youngsville, N.C.; a brother, Joseph Wakeland of Joy, Ill.; a sister, Cheryl Engle of Aledo, Ill.; ten grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
