Freeman signed a free-agent deal with the Tennessee Titans shortly after the completion of the NFL Draft on Sunday, making him the first player in the 10-year history of the UMHB football program to sign with an NFL team.
Freeman - who the Titans plan to look at as a coverage linebacker, safety and special teams player - will report for rookie orientation on Thursday.
“They called me at the end of the draft and said they had been looking me, and wanted to know if I wanted to sign a deal with them,” he said. “It’s been wild, but I am excited about having this opportunity.”
Freeman was the NCAA Division III defensive player of the year as a senior, when he became UMHB’s career tackles leader. The Waco University product was a two-time All-American and three-time All-American Southwest Conference selection.
“We are so excited that Jerrell will get a chance to go into the NFL,” Crusaders coach Pete Fredenburg said, “because he contributed so many things to our program during his four years here.”
The Titans finished the 2007 season with a 10-6 record.
