Patsy Luna
Patsy Luna, incumbent candidate for Temple City Council District 2, was elected to the council in 2005 and is completing her second term. She was elected as mayor pro tem in November 2007. She said careful use of taxpayer money, and reinvestment in town and transportation are important issues.
“We need to continue wise stewardship of taxpayer money to obtain the best return on our investment dollars in the community,” she said.
“We also need to continue efforts to encourage reinvestment in the downtown area, the Martin Luther King neighborhood and in the Southeast Industrial Park.”
Ms. Luna added that the city needs to continue to represent the citizens of Temple as it deals with the myriad transportation issues and major funding needed for highway maintenance and expansion in the Temple area.
Ms. Luna has been a secretary in the legal and medical fields for 43 years, and was employed at the V.A. Hospital in Temple for 31 years.
Council member Luna is married to Edward L. Luna and they have three children, eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Robert Martin
Robert Martin is a local Realtor. He is a former city commissioner in Temple, having served three terms between 1978 and 1984.
He said that listening to voters in District 2 and making improvements are important issues to him.
“I get a lot of calls from people who call and say they can’t get anything done,” he said of response from the council.
“We need a fence around the Jeff Hamilton Park … When kids play basketball the ball goes down into the creek,” he said.
“They cry about money but we got all kinds of money to use in East Temple from the community development fund,” he said. “Instead of using it for infrastructure, use it for houses and things that help the people who live over there.”
He said Ms. Luna has not reacted to requests from people on the East Side.
“I can’t find one thing that Ms. Luna has done for the neighborhood,” he said.
Mia McBride
Mia McBride said she wants to improve on the work the city has done.
“I think one of the things that is important is that all parts of city are very vibrant - vibrant neighborhoods, vibrant commerce,” she said.
“The solution is in working with the city council making sure that … the economics is spread around equally, so that we won’t have parts of the city that are dormant,” she said.
“I think it’s pretty important to hear what it is the people of this city want in their city,” she said.
“It’s happening now, but I think it can even happen on an even greater scale,” she added.
“Some things are coming into fruition slowly but surely, and I think there are some things we can pick up the pace on and continue to work with the citizens of our community to get them more of what they want,” she said.
An entrepreneur, Ms. McBride owned and operated a woman’s dress boutique and two gourmet coffeehouses in the Temple and Killeen malls as well as a snow cone stand in the East Temple community.
She works with her husband in ministry work. He is pastor of Grace Temple Ministries.
She has worked in management positions for Dillard’s in Temple and Alltel, where she served as the regional sales manager for an 11-city region.
