He guided the Eagles to an 8-4 record and their first 11-man playoff victory in school history in the fall of 2007, but Jones won’t be around to build on his success.
Jones will resign from his duties at Milano at the end of the school year to accept a position at Class A Iraan as assistant football coach and head boys basketball coach.
“It’s a great thing financially for me and my family,” said Jones about the move. “It’s a great school that has a lot of resources. We’re going to miss Milano.”
Jones has worked at Milano for the last 13 years. In between his first and most recent coaching stints, Jones served as principal from 2002-05.
The Eagles defeated Leakey 42-0 in bi-district playoff action for the first 11-man playoff victory in school history before losing to eventual runner-up Bremond in the area round.
Jones also guided Milano to a win over Thorndale for the first time in 72 years.
Iraan, which will compete in District 8A in 2008-09, is located 82 miles south of Odessa.
“It’s kind of odd to think we won’t be here next year,” Jones said. “We’re going to miss everyone. They accepted us into the community and we thank them all for the opportunity.”
