Jackson strikes out 12 as No. 4 Salado beats Edna 5-2; Eagles face rival Troy next

LOCKHART - Kevin Jackson pitched a three-hitter with 12 strikeouts, Matt Fritsch made a crucial defensive play and Justin Schiller hit his 10th home run of the season as fourth-ranked Salado beat Edna 5-2 Friday night to sweep its Class 2A area-round baseball playoff series.

The Eagles (25-5) advanced to the Region IV quarterfinals for the third straight season and will battle District 25-2A rival Troy (18-9) next week. Details of that series are yet to be announced. The teams split their two regular-season meetings.

“We’re not talking about (playing Troy) yet,” Salado coach Melvin Bates said. “We’re satisfied for tonight, but (advancing past the third round) is a big step for us. We’ve got a bunch of seniors and they want it.”

Edna had runners on first and second with one out in the sixth when third baseman Fritsch dove to snare a line drive and turned it into a double play, possibly taking away two runs or even more.
