Remschel, who guided Academy to 2002 title, leaves coaching to become principal

LITTLE RIVER-ACADEMY - Academy High School boys basketball coach and assistant principal Alex Remschel stepped down from both positions earlier this month to become principal.

Remschel, who guided the Bumblebees to the Class 2A state basketball championship in 2001-02, began coaching basketball and golf at Academy in 1999 and also was a football assistant.

He continued his coaching duties while serving as athletic director in 2003-04. In 2004-05, Remschel became assistant principal and hired current Academy AD and football coach Royce McAdams.

“I’d moved into the assistant (principal) position and was still coaching basketball and really enjoyed that part,” Remschel said. “Basketball has always been a big part of my life. That’s the thing that always has given me my adrenaline rush.

“I felt for me and my family the opportunity was there to improve myself financially. I had just received my master’s and this is the best way to also improve myself professionally for my future and my family’s future.”

During his nine years as the Bees’ basketball coach, Remschel guided his squads to seven playoffs trips and two district titles. The 33-3 championship squad of 2001-02 defeated Frankston 49-48 for Academy’s only basketball title.

His 2007-08 squad finished 19-12, second in District 25-2A, and lost 54-46 to Hempstead in a bi-district playoff game.
