Rita B. Harper

Services for Rita B. Wood Harper, 83, of Temple will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Hillcrest Cemetery pavilion with the Rev. Billy Ray Crow officiating.

Mrs. Harper died Monday in a Temple nursing home.

She was born Sept. 21, 1924, in Frankfort, Ky., to Lloyd Wood and Lucy Ann Pennix Wood. She was raised and educated in Frankfort. She joined the U.S. Army on March 21, 1945. She served as a surgical technician and received the Victory Medal. She was honorably discharged on Dec. 23, 1945. She married Jesse G. Harper on April 21, 1946. She had been a Temple resident for more than 40 years. She attended Canyon Creek Baptist Church; was a member of Benevolent Patriotic Order of Does No. 139; and was a member of TOPS (Taking Off Pounds Sensibly) for many years.

Her husband preceded her in death on Jan. 15, 1974; and a daughter, Betty J. Robbins preceded her in death on Jan. 2, 1995.

Survivors include two daughters, Pat Vasek and Shirley Ewing, both of Temple; a brother, R.B. Wood of Frankfurt, Ky.; four grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to VistaCare Hospice, 2626 S. 37th St., Temple, 76502; or to any charity.

Visitation is 6-8 p.m. today at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home of Temple (formerly Sheffield).
