Summers in Temple

(Matthew Walters/Telegram)
There’s a 50 percent chance that this summer will be hotter than normal in Temple, according to the National Weather Service.

But, the chance that summer temperatures will be below the average is only 20 percent.

Likewise, the odds are about 50-50 that Temple will get more rainfall between the official start of the season on June 21 and the official end on Sept. 22.

The weather service outlook jibes with that of the Old Farmer’s Almanac, which predicts “summer will be slightly hotter than normal.” The Almanac, though, foresees above normal rainfall.

If history is any indicator, the odds are slim that Bell County will be hit by a tornado during the summer months. Only 11 have been recorded during those months since 1955, the NWS records show.

The last really stormy summer - prior to the 2007 record-smasher - was in 1995, which saw three major storms in June and one each in July, August and September.

Summer 2007 was off the charts, starting in May and continuing through the fall, with 12 people killed and at least 2,000 otherwise affected. Damage totals were well over $10 million.
