The 5-year-old had been ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene just south of the 308 mile marker in Troy by Judge G.W. Ivey, a press release from Chief Keith E. Reed of the Troy Police Department said.
“The child was in a seat belt in the middle of the back seat, but another child was in the same seat belt,” Reed said. “It didn’t hold him in place.”
Reed said a seat belt or a booster seat possibly would have worked to protect the child.
“The other child occupants in the car had minor cuts and bruises from the broken glass,” Reed said. “They walked away safely.”
Officials found a 59-year-old female trapped in the right front passenger seat, suffering from a severely lacerated foot, according to the release. Temple Fire Department Quint 6 and Troy VFD units responded to the scene with the Jaws of Life and extricated her from the vehicle. She was flown to Scott & White Memorial Hospital by helicopter where she had surgery, Reed said.
Scott & White EMS ambulances transported the remaining victims, a 28-year-old female driver and five children, ages 5 to 12, to Scott & White Hospital.
Troy Police, Bell County sheriff’s officers and Texas Department of Public Safety officers responded to the accident. An investigation into the cause of the accident is under way.
“We’re still investigating it,” Reed said, who added that one of the DPS officers reconstructs accidents.
