TC releases names of president finalists

On Monday night the Temple College Board of Trustees announced the names of five finalists in the search for a new president. The candidates are:

n Dr. Glenda Barron, assistant commissioner, The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, Austin

n Dr. Dennis Brown, vice president of instruction/chief academic officer, El Paso Community College, El Paso

n Dr. James Martin, vice president for student affairs, Pensacola Junior College, Pensacola, Fla.

n Dr. Kathy Matlock, president, Southeastern Community College, Whiteville, N.C.

n Dr. Johnny Moore, vice president for student affairs, Indian River College, Fort Pierce, Fla.

The candidates will be brought to campus July 8–14 for interviews. Each candidate will spend a day on campus meeting with a screening committee, faculty, administration workers and the board of trustees. There will be a public forum at 2:30 p.m. each day followed by a public reception allowing community members to meet the candidates.

Candidates are expected to visit the campus in the following order:

n Tuesday, July 8: Dr. Dennis Brown

n Wednesday, July 9: Dr. Kathy Matlock

n Thursday, July 10: Dr. Johnny Moore,

n Friday, July 11: Dr. Glenda Barron

n Monday, July 14: Dr. James Martin

The candidate announcement was made during a special board meeting. A Presidential Search Screening Committee, consisting of six TC employees and five community members, worked together to name the finalists.

“The screening process worked tremendously,” said John H. Anthony, of Executive Resources Consulting Service in McKinney, which is responsible for overseeing the search for a new president.

Anthony said the college received 47 applications and nominations, which was narrowed down to 25 applications over a two-week period, during which the screening committee looked at each candidate’s credentials.

“There was a tremendous amount of dialogue that took place during the screening process,” said Anthony. “I would say that each member probably spent between 12 and 15 hours reviewing and debating applications.”

“The final list is outstanding,” said Anthony. “The board will have a difficult decision to make during the hiring process.”

TC Board Chair Jack W. Jones Jr. reminded board members they don’t necessarily have to choose from the list of recommended finalists, but said he could not foresee a reason why they wouldn’t. Jones also added he hoped area residents who had questions for the candidates would show up during the scheduled forums, saying the board would like “the public’s input to make a selection.”
