Tough times call for cuddly toys

Everybody needs a hug - especially children who find themselves in stressful surroundings.

Eddie Sammons, a resident of the domiciliary at the Olin E. Teague Veterans’ Center, took that sentiment to heart when he initiated the Hugs program.

Sammons said a passage in a book gave him the idea to provide toys to local police to give to the children they come in contact with at crime scenes or at accidents.

Information about the toy drive was published in the domiciliary newsletter, “The Veteran’s Voice,” and posters were put up around the building.

“We’ll continue to collect toys for the police and fire department for as long as people are interested,” Sammons said.

Thursday, Sammons and domiciliary residents Donald Bulson and Gregory Walker parted with about 80 stuffed animals VA residents and staff collected over the past month. Temple Police Chief Gary Smith and Deputy Chief John Sharp picked up the lions, bears, dogs, bunnies and other cuddly toys.

“We really appreciate this,” Smith told the group. “We’ve been giving stuffed animals to kids for more than 20 years and they really come in handy in stressful situations whether it’s car crashes, disturbances at their home or at crime scenes.”

The toys also give officers a chance to create a bond with children and help the youngster realize the officer is there to help.

B.J. Gay, medical clerk, told Smith the VA staff and patients want to continue providing toys for the children.

“They think every child deserves a hug,” Gay said.

“Even some adults,” Smith replied.
