That’s according to the latest filings with the Federal Elections Commission accessed Thursday.
The senator from Arizona has raised nearly $56,000 in the 765- zip code area that includes Temple, Killeen, Lampasas and Belton. The senator from Illinois has raised about $37,000.
Obama, though, has received more small donations, while McCain has received the maximum of $2,300 from each of 19 people.
Several donors have given over and over again.
For example, Nick Lozano has sent in 13 separate donations of from $10 to $30 each to Obama. Charlene Lee has sent in 11 contributions to Obama ranging in amount from $25 to $50.
On the McCain side, Hermine A. Sanders has made 14 gifts ranging in size from $25 to $50 each.
McCain has also received a large donation - $2,200 - from state Rep. Diane White Delisi, a Republican from Temple.
Connie Green, city manager of Killeen, has donated $100 to Obama.
Across Texas, Obama leads in fundraising with $8.3 million compared to $7.3 million for McCain.
Gathering large donations from a few people seems to be the McCain strategy nationwide, according to a story by Fredreka Schouten appearing in USA Today last week. She reported on an analysis showing Obama receiving most of his contributions from those who give $200 or less. On the other hand, she wrote, McCain has relied on what she called “elite” fundraisers.
