The driver of a dump truck was trapped for about 30 minutes after a collision with a pickup on the feeder road of Interstate 35 between Salado and Jarrell.

The driver of the dump truck, who was conscious and talking to emergency workers, was airlifted and two others taken by ambulance to Scott & White Memorial Hospital after the Friday afternoon wreck, said Capt. Le Roy Vargas, Temple Fire and Rescue incident commander.

The truck was carrying a load of dirt and overturned into a ditch on the northbound feeder road near mile marker 279. The contents of the pickup, including tools, were strewn down the embankment after the dump truck hit it on the passenger side. The pickup’s driver managed to get the truck back on the feeder road where it came to a rest about 150 yards down the road from the collision.

Witnesses said the white Chevrolet pickup was traveling backward on the one-way feeder road when it was struck.

Texas Department of Public Safety trooper Ray Olsen, who gathered information from witnesses, said he thought the pickup might have been turning because of where it was hit.

Salado and Jarrell Volunteer fire departments were first responders on scene.

Temple Fire and Rescue was called in to help get the man out of the dump truck, Vargas said. By the time they arrived, the man was freed.

Three volunteer fire department rescue trucks from Salado, one from Jarrell, Scott & White EMS and TxDOT crews were on scene.
