Central Texas Rocks! Concerts consume August

As summer winds down, the area is about to burst with major acts - from rock ‘n’ roll and Texas country to alternative and hip-hop.

With a combined total of more than 25 million records sold, you’ve probably heard of one or two of the following acts. If there isn’t an artist you think you need to see in the next 30 days, then think again.

Staind

The multi-platinum band will appear with Theory of a Deadman and Hinder at the Bell County Expo Center in Belton. Staind is on tour to promote their new album “Illusion of Progress,” which is scheduled to hit stores Aug. 19. During the past nine years, the band has had a number of successful singles spanning several albums, selling over 15 million albums worldwide.

The band’s first hit in 1999 was “Outside.” The song was featured on the album “Break the Cycle” which sold more than 7 million copies. Rolling Stone magazine called them “the grim genre’s most song-oriented, downright sensitive band in years.” The follow-up single “It’s Been Awhile” spent 16 and 14 weeks on top of the modern and mainstream charts, respectively.

Hinder

Hinder entered the rock scene in 2005 with their single “Get Stoned” from the album “Extreme Behavior.” The band is best known for their second single “Lips of an Angel.” The song hit No. 1 on several charts and “Extreme Behavior” has sold more than 2 million copies in the U.S. The band’s sophomore album “Take It To The Limit” is expected on Nov. 4.

Theory of a Deadman

Theory of a Deadman released its self-titled album “Theory of a Deadman” in 2002. This album released four singles, with two international videos for “Nothing Could Come Between Us” and “Make Up Your Mind.” These two songs propelled them into more mainstream music and acknowledgement. Theory’s second album “Gasoline” was released in 2005.

Staind, Hinder and Theory of a Deadman will perform at the Bell County Expo Center on Aug. 13. Tickets are $34 in advance and $38 at the door. For information, call 254-933-5353.

Candlebox

Formed in 1990, Candlebox sold more than 4 million copies of its self-titled debut that peaked at number seven on Billboard’s album charts. Their follow up album, “Lucy,” was certified gold in 1996.

More than 10 years later, Candlebox returns with three of four founding members for a new album and tour: “Into the Sun.”

According to John Kosik with the Associated Press, “Fans of the band’s smash hits like “You” and “Far Behind” are likely to be enthralled with Kevin Martin’s soaring vocals and Peter Klett’s chugging riffs.”

Candlebox will perform at Whiskey River in Waco on Tuesday. Tickets are $21.50 in advance and $25 at the door. For information, call 254-772-6811.

Cory Morrow

Morrow is a singer/songwriter from Houston. Along with fellow singer Pat Green, Morrow helped popularize the music genre known as Texas Country. His latest offering, “Vagrants And Kings,” finds Morrow at his strongest- artistically, personally and spiritually.

Morrow calls the album a “snapshot” of his life and he notes that “I got to this place where everything made sense, where I was seeing life more clearly. Then the music started flowing.”

Morrow will perform at the Harker Height Event Center on Aug. 16. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. For information, call 254-554-3600.

Ginuwine

R&B artist Ginuwine has released a number of multi-platinum and platinum-selling albums and singles.

The singer’s first in 1996 was the song “Pony” from “Ginuwine...The Bachelor.” His second album was 1999’s “100% Ginuwine.” Both albums were certified 2X platinum. The artist is currently working on his sixth album “The New Beginning.”
