Garland Bridges Jr.

ODESSA — Funeral services for retired Lt. Col. Garland Drewry Bridges Jr., 84, of Odessa, formerly of Temple will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Crossroads Fellowship Chapel with the Rev. Griffin Jones officiating.

Burial will be at a later date in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.

Mr. Bridges died Friday, Aug. 8, at his home.

He was born July 22, 1924, to Garland D. Bridges and Annie Thomas Bridges in Cadiz, Trigg County, Ky. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, 1944-46. He married Johnnye F. Buth of Lockney. He enrolled in Texas Technological College in Lubbock, receiving a master’s degree and a reserve commission in the Air Force. He was recalled by the Air Force for the Korean War in 1951 and served 31 years. His was stationed in Phalsboug, France, Tripoli, Libya, and Da Nang, Vietnam. His decorations include two Meritorious Service Medals and a Bronze Star.

He later worked in life insurance sales for 15 years. He lived in Temple 2003-06 before moving to Odessa. He served as a church deacon and was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Sons of the American Revolution.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years of Odessa; two sons, Gary L. Bridges of Odessa and Alan W. Bridges of San Antonio; two sisters, Ana Foose and Willa Worley, both of Phoenix, Ariz.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Home in Odessa.
