Poth, which has played in the 2A final the last five seasons winning three championships, took care of the Lady Tigers (1-2) in quick fashion, 25-18, 25-21. Senior setter Myca San Miguel had 16 assists and eight digs and sophomore Grace Weaver had 10 digs.
“We decided to show up probably nine points before the end of the second game,” Patton said. “They aren’t playing with the confidence level they need to be playing with. They might have been intimidated by other teams at the tournament. In my mind they have no reason to be.”
Belton regrouped in the second match to sweep Medina Valley 25-21, 25-19. San Miguel had 25 assists, seven digs and two aces, Weaver had 13 kills and four aces and senior Becca Owen added seven kills.
“They were having a lot more fun,” Patton said. “I saw a lot of changes. We went over the stats from the first game. They still weren’t playing with confidence. I told them ‘You should not walk into any gym and feel inferior.’ I think that motivated them.”
The Lady Tigers play at 8 a.m. today against the winner of Comfort and Fredericksburg.
