--

The Family Life Center has been on Sixth Street for about 12 years, but Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church is still in debt for it.

“We’ve been paying on it since 1996,” said Helen Muńoz, bookkeeper.

But the church should be debt-free come October, said Father Tom Chamberlain.

“We’re hoping that the Aug. 31 Fall Fiesta will bring in enough funds to finish paying for the Family Center,” Chamberlain said.

The Fall Fiesta is an annual celebration at Our Lady of Guadalupe. In addition to a raffle and auction, the event features a wide variety of musical entertainment, dancing, a car show, a train ride and game booths. The party also includes the crowning of the Fall Fiesta Queen; this year she will be Sabrina Hernandez.

“We’re excited at the opportunity to pay off the debt,” Chamberlain said. “And we’re thankful for the Family Center. Without it, we wouldn’t have a place to do all the things that are necessary in the life of the parish.”

The Family Life Center functions as space for offices, classrooms and a meeting hall.

“The youth group meets there, church advisory groups meet there and fund-raising happens there,” Chamberlain said. “The Family Life Center is very much a part of the church.”
