Piling on the heartbreak: Kim Edmonds loses photos of deceased son in robbery

Kelton Edmonds and his mom, Kim, were at a youth baseball game in May at which Kelton threw out the first pitch. Kelton died this month. Most of Kim’s pictures of her son were stolen along with a computer when her house was burglarized this week. Matthew Walters/Telegram
It’s bad enough when your house is burglarized, but when what’s taken is a computer with photos of your only son who died just a week before, it’s heartrending.

That is what happened to Kim Edmonds, just four days after the funeral of her 6-year-old son, Kelton, who died of a brain tumor.

The burglary happened in the 5200 block of Colonel Travis Street in south Temple sometime on Tuesday. The burglar or burglars lifted the glass sliding door off the runners in the back of the house to gain entry.

Kim had taken a trip to her hometown to be with family after her son’s funeral and because her sister had just given birth to her first child.

“I just felt like it was a good thing to do for the girls. They are young and hurting and not quite understanding everything. Being surrounded and supported by our extended family would help divert their pain,” she said. “And, of course, the girls loved meeting their new cousin.”

The distraction was welcomed by a family grieving.

“They only took my laptop and my daughter’s iPod shuffle, a digital camera and a modem,” Edmonds said. “They can keep the computer. They can keep the iPod. They can keep everything. All I am asking is that they put the photos of Kelton on a CD and take them to the police station or a letterbox or something. I just want the photos. Even if they post them - it’s all I have.”

The black, wide-screen HP laptop held about 1,000 photos of Kelton, mainly from the last year of his life. E-mails from family and friends also were stored on the computer.

“It had our trip to Dallas photos, our camping trip . . . it just had everything that was special to Kelton. It had him being happy, enjoying life with his friends and family,” Edmonds said as she held back tears.

“I don’t care if they just throw a CD in the front yard. All I am asking is for the person to give me the photos of Kelton.”
