Texas suspends defensive tackle Houston after arrest on DWI charge

AUSTIN - Texas defensive tackle Lamarr Houston is suspended for Saturday’s game at Texas El-Paso after his arrest on a misdemeanor drunken driving charge a few hours after the Longhorns beat Florida Atlantic 52-10.

“We’ve talked with Lamarr and his family and decided that he will not be making the trip to El Paso to play in this week’s game,” coach Mack Brown said Sunday night in a statement. “He asked to apologize to the team and did so at our team meeting earlier today. The issue will be handled within the team and any further action will be addressed at the appropriate time.”

Last season, Brown suspended linebacker Sergio Kindle and defensive end Henry Melton for the first three games after drunken driving arrests, saying “we’ve got to send a message and kids have to learn.”

Houston started against Florida Atlantic on Saturday night and had three tackles.

He was arrested after a minor accident in the downtown entertainment district about 3:15 a.m. Sunday. No one was injured, Austin police said.

Austin police spokesman James Mason told The Associated Press that he had no information on whether anyone else was in the car with Houston.

Houston is a junior from Colorado Springs, Colo., who moved to defensive tackle after playing his first two seasons at defensive end. He appeared in all 13 games last season and started 11.

He was an honorable-mention selection on the Associated Press' All-Big 12 team last year.
