Dan Thomasson, lake manager for Stillhouse Hollow Reservoir and Lake Belton, said crowds at the two lakes were quiet but not as large as some holiday weekends.
“We had a good weekend, in fact everything is a little slow,” he said. “But we had good crowds for a Monday. We didn’t have to turn anyone back because of overcrowding.”
He speculated that between the first day of dove hunting, the Labor Day holiday and others keeping an eye on Hurricane Gustav, the crowds were not as thick as they might have been.
“I’m sure with opening day of dove season a lot of people are out in the field rather than at the lakes,” he said. “Between the lakes and the fields, we’ve go a good showing at both.”
At Temple Mall, the Friends of the Temple Public Library book sale went well, according to organizers.
Book sale co-chair Elyse Jensen said many customers came and went and came again.
“We had a lot of people come this year,” she said. “We had people come every day who we recognized so there were plenty of repeat customers.”
She added that one person, taking advantage of the final day, $5 per bag promotion, purchased 24 bags - most of them non-fiction.
“It was definitely a success this year,” she said. “We hope to make it bigger and better next year.”
Susan Howe, former president of the group, said the Friends raised nearly $26,000 this year during the event, which began Thursday and ended Monday.
“I think it went well,” she said. “We had good traffic throughout the sale and got help from lots of good volunteers, and sold probably more books than we ever had before.”
She said the remaining books would be taken by the Waco Friends group for use in that group’s sale.
