The latest campaign finance data filed with the Federal Elections Commission show Obama ahead by about $1 million overall. The total, though, is only through the end of July.
In ZIP codes starting with 765, which includes Bell County, McCain has raised about $76,000, while Obama has raised nearly $54,000.
But, the Democratic contender for the presidency has more contributors than the Republican. And far fewer have given upward of $2,000 apiece. At least 15 donors have given McCain $2,000 or more. Obama has received only five donations in that amount.
Many individual donors have given small chunks of cash over time to Obama, though. For example, Cindy Kniggee, a teacher from Killeen, has sent off 18 donations of $5 and $10 apiece. Marjorie Irbie of Harker Heights has given the Democrat’s campaign 15 gifts ranging in value from $13 to $100.
Neither Arthur Resa, Bell County Democratic Party chair, nor Nancy Boston, county GOP chair, were surprised that Obama had been running ahead in raising funds.
He is getting well organized throughout the state, Resa said. But, he won’t get any official party money from Bell County because local officials feel they’ve not been dealt with fairly in the past by the Democratic National Committee, he said.
