City Fed plans ‘Sweet Chair-ity’ fashion show

Fashion show co-chair Martha Daniel is modeling a Yanci Fugel washable travel jersey top and slacks that are flattering and require easy care. She makes a bold statement in the “must have trend” of the season — a glazed orange nylon and polyester trench coat. “Yanci Fugel is one of the top sportswear designers who specializes in sophisticated soft clothing for women on the go,” Davis said. The City Federation of Women’s Clubs hopes to use “Fun! Laughs! (and) Good times!” to better the odds for area and community organizations with its sixth annual Fashion Show and Champagne Brunch. This year’s event entitled “Sweet Chair-ity” is set for 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, at the Cultural Arts Center, 3011 N. Third. St. in Temple.

Tickets for the brunch and fashion show are $40 each, and can be purchased at 219 King Circle in Temple. Call 778-1270 for reservations or more information. Tables seating up to eight are available. Seats fill up fast so reservations are strongly recommended.

Last year the event raised more than $23,000 to benefit 15 Bell County high school seniors and seven community groups.

“It’s the best kind of work you can do,” co-chair Martha Daniel said.

According to fashion show co-producer Barbara Chandler, this year Sherri’s The RoseBud will feature “the trends of the season including everything from up-to-date rain wear and day sportswear to cocktail and fabulous formalwear.”

“This year large jewelry is the big deal,” she added. It’s back and it’s flashy.

Like always, the show will involve about 40 models representing a range of age and size and coming from many walks of life.

Modeling fashions from The RoseBud will be Kate Arthur, Nancy Birdwell, Dr. Cheryl Cipriani, Hilde Cort, Elaine Dobos, Carol Emerson, Fran Farrow, Ann Harder, Carol Jones, Debbie Mabry, Dr. Catherine McNeal, Carol Mills, Christi Ming, Mallory Ming, Joanna Moore, Cindy Newton, Brittany Norman, Chonie Pischinger, Dr. Barbara Weis Probe, Lisa Reeve, Linda Ringler, Kay Roberts, Mary Ann Stringfellow, Seleese Thompson, Janice Wilson, Sharon Wilson, Carla Wright, Carrice Wunsch, Rachel White, Sharla Winkler, and Belton and Temple schools superintendents Vivian Baker and Robin Battershell.

Ensuring the models are zipped and together will be the Backstage Divas, Dottie Oliver, Cindy Cashion and Laurlynn Carlisle.

The RoseBud has been an integral part of the show since its beginning and this is the second year owner Sherri Davis has been involved. “It has been a great pleasure for our store to work with this wonderful organization,” she said. “I am grateful once again to give the time and talents of our staff and wonderful models to help raise scholarship money for worthy students in Bell County.”

Lourdes Chavez will be the guest designer at the fashion show. Ms. Chavez is heir to the legacy of fabled Hollywood designer Bill Travilla, the man who made glamorous movie stars look even lovelier. She has been with Travilla since 1993 and now creates three collections a year for the company.

While the event’s main purpose is to raise funds for scholarships for Bell County students, those attending will also get an opportunity to taste great food made by members of the City Federation and will enjoy superb service from suavely dressed businessmen, known as the Black Tie Guys.

The menu will include Chicken ’N’ Cherry Salad, Marinated Vegetable Salad, Baked Fruit, Chocolate Sheet Cake, and Easy Herb Biscuits. Ilene Miller, food and chefs committee chair, said they looked for recipes that would have color, contrast and flavor, but were simple and manageable enough to serve 400-500 people. Scaled down, the recipes are also simple enough to make for just four or five people, she said. (Look for those in the Sept. 24 issue of the Temple Daily Telegram.)

Sherri’s The RoseBud has also worked with designer Charlie Wharton to secure a 37.5 CT, lab-grown Blue Topaz pendant wrapped in Starfire’s elaborate Crown Design on a Starfire GP “V” collar as a raffle item. It is valued at $1,410. Tickets for the raffle are $5 each or six for $25. Tickets will be sent with invitations but are also available from Sherri’s The RoseBud or the City Federation of Women’s Clubs.

A highlight of the day will be the auction of chairs decorated by area artists. Proceeds from the auction will benefit area community groups. Last year, the group awarded $9,700 to groups including Temple Railroad and Heritage Museum, Temple Literacy Council, Family Promise of East Bell County, Aware Central Texas, Children’s Advocacy Center of Central Texas, Temple Public Library and to Families in Crisis for a playground

The City Federation of Women’s Clubs was organized in 1915 and includes individual members and 16 clubs. Its original purposes were beautification, creation of recreation opportunities, and promoting health and safety, patriotism, education, the availability of social services, the creative arts and a sense of community. Its mission statement includes a commitment to “developing and promoting the arts, education, morality and philanthropy in our community.”
