Hurricane Ike threat pushes seven high school games to Thursday, UMHB opener to Friday

Hurricane Ike might be a couple of days away from even changing the Central Texas weather conditions, but its effects already are being felt on area football games.

With the eye of Ike expected to be over Central Texas by Saturday evening, Mary Hardin-Baylor has moved its season-opening game up one night to Friday and seven area schools have changed their games from Friday to today.

Many others, while still preparing to play Friday night, are on alert in case the weather looks like it will turn bad today on Friday.

UMHB’s season opener against Southern Nazarene (Okla.) has been rescheduled from 6 p.m. Saturday to the same time Friday at Tiger Field in Belton.

From District 13-5A, Killeen Shoemaker’s game at Bastrop has been moved to 7 p.m. today. Killeen Ellison has changed the time and location of its game against Round Rock. The Eagles were slated to host the Dragons on Friday, but they will play Round Rock at 7 p.m. today at Dragon Stadium.

As for area teams from District 24-3A, Cameron Yoe (1-1) will play at Lexington (1-1) at 7:30 tonight while Rockdale (2-0) hosts Marlin (0-2).

From 20-2A, Rosebud-Lott (2-0) will host Class A No. 7-ranked Normangee (2-0) at 7:30 p.m. today. In 26-A, Milano will be at Iola at 7:30 tonight, when Bartlett (1-1) will play at Lago Vista (2-0).

In other games of local interest, District 12-5A’s College Station A&M Consolidated and Bryan both have rescheduled their games to tonight. In 24-3A, Bryan Rudder, Navasota and Caldwell have moved their games to tonight; Madisonville and Taylor have not. Also, Bremond at Thorndale has been moved to tonight.

The latest National Hurricane Center projections show the eye of Ike making landfall near Port Lavaca either late Friday night or early Saturday and reaching Central Texas by Saturday evening, possibly still at hurricane strength.

On Wednesday afternoon the National Weather Service issued a special advisory stating that after Ike makes landfall early Saturday it will travel up the Interstate 35 corridor, weakening to tropical storm strength as it moves north. However, it said the Temple-Killeen area will experience sustained winds in excess of 50 mph with hurricane force gusts possible on Saturday afternoon through early Sunday.

Areas to the east of the hurricane eye might also be impacted by tornadoes, according to the statement.
